OVERVIEW
Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 bursts onto the scene with youthful energy, classical elegance, and a few mischievous surprises—because even a musical revolutionary has to start somewhere. Under the baton of François López-Ferrer, soprano Madison Leonard (a Utah Opera favorite recently seen in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro) dazzles with some of Mozart’s most enchanting arias.
The program also features Arvo Pärt’s whimsically titled Wenn Bach Bienen gezüchtet hätte (“If Bach Had Been a Beekeeper”), a buzzing, hypnotic play on the letters B-A-C-H—an homage to the composer’s name rather than his era. Last performed by the Utah Symphony at St. Mary’s in 2019, it offers a witty nod to Baroque lineage with Pärt’s minimalist touch.
