OVERVIEW

Listen to the story of a soldier on leave who, in a moment of desperation, trades his old violin for a magic book promised to reveal the future—and make him rich. What seems like an easy choice soon spirals into a world of disastrous consequences. Narrated by Kevin Nakatani, Stravinsky’s L’Historie du Soldat is a tale of temptation and fate that explores the cost of making deals with The Devil.

Written nearly a century later, Salonen’s Catch and Release is a companion piece. Composed for the same combination of instruments—clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, percussion, violin, and double bass—this three-movement chamber work shares tonal and thematic resonance with Stravinsky’s piece. Together, they create a powerful pairing—blending the sharp edge and fateful narrative of The Soldier’s Tale with the introspective, evocative textures of Catch and Release—making for an evening full of tension, fate, and unexpected turns.
