Schubert 6, Janácek & Haydn
- Wed 8:00 PM Aug 05, 2020
The 2020 Deer Valley®? Music Festival’s Chamber Orchestra Series continues with Utah Symphony’s Acting Principal Cellist Matthew Johnson performing Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 1, composed between 1761 and 1765 and lost during his lifetime, only to be rediscovered in 1961.
Schubert’s Symphony No. 6, “Little C Major,” is a tribute to the lyricism of Rossini in the inner movements and the heroic sound of Beethoven in the outer movements.
A work from Czeck composer Leoš Janácek’s early period, the Suite for Strings stands out as a reflection of Victorian musical taste: genteel, lightweight, and sensibly balanced.
Demonstrating the many facets of the solo cello, from growling low chords to soaring scale patterns in the instrument’s high register, Haydn redefined orchestral playing with his fantastic concerto for cello.
SCHUBERT: Symphony No. 6
JANÁCEK: Suite for Strings
HAYDN: Cello Concerto No. 1
